Latin Leaders is a
Toastmasters International club which meets every Tuesday night from 6:30 to 7:35.
Our club is bilingual. The first Tuesday of every month we hold the
meeting in Spanish and encourage our members to do their presentations/table topics in Spanish, although it
is optional and you may speak in either English or Spanish at any time. We strive to have two speakers every
week and a table topics session to give an opportunity for everyone to practice speaking. Additionally, all
members participate in meeting roles in an organized environment. Our focus is to improve leadership skills
as well as speaking skills in a way that is enjoyable.
The feedback from most people who visit us (and most of them join us) is that our club is very supportive of
all members, encouraging participation and providing positive feedback for the development of our members -
but you should experience that for yourself. You are welcome to join us as a guest any time and let us know
what you think. For more information email us at info@latinleaders.org,
or just walk in on Tuesdays and we'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
The Toastmaster for our meeting today, Pat Gary, began our program by introducing the theme of the day as being “Proactive” and with the Word of the Day as “Paradigm” or “thinking out of the box”. She began by explaining that the definition of being proactive means to cause something to happen rather than waiting for something to happen. She continued by stating that she joined our Toastmasters club by taking a proactive approach and making her paradigm shift to improve her public speaking.
We had a surprise visit by our area, Governor Ed Hill. Mr. Hill enlightened our group on different views and aspects of Toastmasters. He invited our speakers to attend his Monday afternoon Toastmasters group (held at noon) in Santa Ana and offered us an “exchange” student. Nahetzin volunteered to be the exchange speaker for our group. Mr. Hill was assigned as the AH counter and joined in on our Table Topic discussions (bailing one of our “frozen” members out — thank you Ed!) We were also provided member training by Mr. Hill at Original Mikes. He informed us that there is a Humorous speech contest coming up in October – we are looking for volunteers. See Dan Cossack if you are interested. It was such a pleasure to speak and learn from Mr. Hill and he assures us that he will be dropping by again.
David Urquizo a new member to our group, presented with a strong Icebreaker speech. He shared with our group that he has been married for 22 years, a rarity in today’s society, and a reflection of his character. He is of the baby-boomer generation, enjoys, music, vintage items, is in the real-estate related business and has one child attending college. He showed fantastic patience and calm when his speech was interrupted by an unexpected screaming, child visitor. Good job David! David presents with excellent speaking skills and shared with us that he joined Toastmasters to build on the current skills. He presents as an asset to our group.
Carlos Ortiz, a veteran (veterano) of the Toastmasters group presented with his eighth speech entitled “Evolution In Reverse”. His speech brought to our attention, with its excellent visuals and story, the affect that human society is having on this earth. He enlightened us as to how our earth is being destroyed by toxic waste dumping, and showed the effects of pollution dumped into the ocean and how we are killing off masses of sea life. With no solution in sight. Carlos expanded on his lessons learned from previous speeches, i.e. speech organization, getting to the point sentence structure and vocal variety.
Our topic masters, general evaluators, evaluators and duty masters all helped make this meeting run smoothly. A superb job by all.
The Toastmasters meeting for September 5th will go forward, as there was some discussion as to cancellation of this meeting due to the Labor Day weekend, however, everyone is encouraged to attend.
Our mission is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning
environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop
communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster
self-confidence and personal growth.
